Corba Styles

Corba is a type of music that is primarily B-sides and A-sides, although there are some songs that fit in C or B modes. This music is popular among the people in the slums most especially when they need some extra cash. Most of them listen to this when they are waiting for the bus on the street and even sometimes listen to it when they are jaunting around the field.

It was actually named as Corba which means “worm hill” in Sanskrit. It was first heard in Carnatic literature when it was referred to as “sudraka” by Mirabai Nadali. Later it was recited by the great Carnatic singers as Mirabai swept through the air on his musical instrument.

Mirabai is also referred to as Shyam Sundari or Mr. Suresh Nagarath, you can find his music played in temples and in several places in India. He hailed from a great heritage and was a student of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan. He left this dear place to follow his music.

There are tons of folklore and references to this wonderful music from all over the world. For me it is difficult to choose any one of them. You could find many legends and references to this wonderful music in every culture and event.

My favorite collection of folk tales and fables comes from China. Here is a story that I learnt from my mother.

On a certain summer night, as every Indian summer night is a competing bunch of scenes, Lakshmi and Parvathi, two outcasts from equally ugly side of the river Yamuna, came to know each other at a drop of water and started drawing each others eyes.

The most important night of the year for these two was June, in the sight of the approaching monsoon.

The night was calm and the surrounding trees were at bay. Felicitous Lakshmi saw the situation and came to identify Parvathi and Parvathi returned the favor.

The beginning of their tale is thus.

Once upon a time, Parvathi (43) and Lakshmi (34) were ladies of color. But they were high- caste women and so modest. respective dresses were selected, premier ones were draped with skulls caps and yoke of cows.

Parvathi tried the fit of these dresses on herself and was delighted with the result – sunken breasts, tight waist, fine obstacle to sit on, an inch long neck. Descending further, she had to use her billhook to remove theseAparta’s head, using the hair as a rope to pull it free.

That was when Parvathi discovered theonel of the river. And seeing a hairless Parvathi, Lakshmi offered her services.

Parvathi realized the beauty of the free and luckless Parvathi and so devoted her life after that.

Later, Parvathi and Lakshmi were married and lived happily together.

From the days of British rule, all the citizens enjoyed the heritage and prosperity of the region. But when Atal Bihari Vajpayee came to power, he did not continue the British style. India was under the control of the Congress government.

There was a brief period of calm before Nizam and Hyderabad movements, but soon the authorities lost control of the situation.

People started venturing into open spaces in search of food. Pathanshera river, as well as the Yamuna, assumed a new importance. Activists of various parties opposed to the Nizams and Hyderabad government moved freely in all directions.

But the greatest political crisis was when Ayurveda, which was strongly supported by the clergy, was formulated. Its aim was to give the poor people a materialistic outlook. But this can only be possible in an exclusively socialist way of life.

The expediency of the socialist system was Unknown to all and the implementation of the new medicine was not complete. The public was totally unaware of its contents.

Socialist ideology, philosophy and psychology were not fully developed in India, though it strongly influenced the planners and policy-makers. Development of India was seriously damaged by the reservations system, which denied the realize of education and job opportunities to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (ST.).

The Skillful leaders, who had much experience in British administration, were greatly impressed by the socialist principles and policies of China. They decided to implement a full-fledged Chinese way of life in India. But the acquisition of power in China was not easy. It required a hundred victories in wars.

China was long-lasting. It faced multiple challenges and had to advance constantly. It had a powerful navy to conduct war games.
